Criminal Investigation Division

The Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service investigates possible criminal violations of the Internal Revenue laws and related offenses, to include violations of the Bank Secrecy Act (Title 31). Criminal violations under the jurisdiction of the Criminal Investigation Division relate to financial crimes involving Federal taxes, money laundering, and currency transactions. The principal enforcement emphasis is on investigations involving Federal income, employment and excise taxes. These encompass not only individuals and businesses, but also those engaged in illegal activities.

The United States Customs Service, Office of Investigations conducts investigations involving the illegal importation/exportation of goods/currency into or from the United States. The investigations include smuggling, international transport of unreported currency, child pornography, fraud, prohibited imports (i.e., counterfeit goods), drug interdiction, and the illegal export of weapons, munitions and high technology items.
United States Customs Agents are located throughout the world and are frequently in a position to assist local law enforcement officials on international matters.
This office has jurisdiction for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the Southwest portion of the State of Ohio.


POSTAL INSPECTION SERVICE

The Postal Inspection Service is responsible for the investigation of violations of postal laws and other investigative matters relating to the Postal Service, including burglanes of postal units; holdups of and assaults on postal employees; theft of mail; forgery of money orders; fraudulent use of the mails; obscene matter in the mails; explosives; intemal machines, poisons, etc., in the mails; willful damage of postal property and letter and rural mail receptacles; interception or obstruction of the mails, and other matters of a similar nature.
