Bank Robber Indicted

LOUISVILLE, KY—A federal grand jury in Louisville returned an indictment against Chad E. Schaffner, age 37, of Indianapolis, Indiana, on charges of armed bank robbery (18 U.S.C. §2113(a) & (3), and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence (18 U.S.C. §924(c)), United States Attorney Candace G. Hill of the Western District of Kentucky announced today.

The Indictment alleges that on May 7, 2009, Schaffner robbed the River City Bank at 3603 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky, and in doing so brandished a Taurus 9 mm handgun at the tellers and customers. Schaffner has been arrested and is being held by Federal Authorities in the Eastern District of Tennessee in Greenville, for the August 18, 2009 robberies of the Community National Bank in Jefferson City and the First Tennessee Bank in Morristown, Tennessee.

In the event of a conviction, the maximum potential penalties are life imprisonment, a $500,000 fine, and supervised release for a period of five years.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Randy Ream, and it was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
